Habitat Gives Single Mom New Freedom In Pain Court

Habitat For Humanity of Chatham-Kent is building its fifth home, this time in Pain Court for a single mom.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday at 45 St. Bernadette St. The goal is to have Cindy and her two children move in by Labour Day.

An emotional Cindy, who doesn't want her last name published, says it’s a tremendous gift that will change her family forever because the lot is safe and private.

"Seven years ago I started over with two babies and nothing else. Four years ago I promised my child that in five years I'll buy her a house. Well, it was starting to look pretty grim but now with this opportunity from Habitat I can keep my promise," says Cindy.

Cindy says she's looking forward to owning her first home.

"The motto for Habitat is a hand up not a handout and this is exactly what they're giving me. I could not buy a safe, new and healthy home without a helping hand. My children were so young when we moved into the apartment building that we live in now that they've never had a yard to play in or the freedom to just sit outside," she says.

Cindy thanks everyone involved and says her family is looking forward to their new found freedom.

"It will be so wonderful for them to have a real home and to be able to play outside whenever they want. I'm very grateful to have this chance to give my children the home they deserve. This is the largest stepping stone to a better future for my family that we could have ever imagined," Cindy says.
