UPDATE: Wallaceburg Apartment Fire Displaces Residents

Chatham-Kent firefighters helped evacuate over a dozen residents and pets from a burning apartment building in Wallaceburg.

Officials say emergency crews responded to a report of a structural fire at 800 Wallace St. in Wallaceburg on Sunday at around 9am.

Due to the quick response from emergency crews, the building was quickly evacuated and no injuries were reported.

The fire department was able to control and extinguish the fire quickly.

It is reported that at least 12 people were rescued from balconies.

A number of residents have been displaced and sent to the Moose Lodge in Wallaceburg where they met with municipal officials who are helping them to find temporary shelter at local hotels and motels.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service says it would like to thank all the community partners that pitched in to help residents with transportation, shelter, food, and water while their building was evacuated.

The Ontario Fire Marshall office has been contacted and will be working with Chatham-Kent police throughout the investigation.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
