Police Search For Suspected Arsonist In Chatham

Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers are appealing to the public for information on two suspicious fires in Chatham.

Police say the first one was reported at around 10:45pm on January 31 at a shed on Stanley Ave. near the south end of the Black Bridge. Fire officials say a small fire there was extinguished by the property owner.

Minutes later, a fire was reported at the old Water Works property at the north end of the Black Bridge. By the time fire officials arrived at that scene, the building already had smoke coming out of the windows and flames were visible on the first floor.

No injuries were reported at either scene.

Investigators say police and fire crews who responded to the scenes both detected a strong odour of Kerosene at both fires and found an empty fuel can in a wooded area nearby.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Chatham-Kent police or Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222 TIPS (8477).
