UPDATE: Fire Damages Ridgetown Municipal Garage

Chatham-Kent firefighters are battling a fire at one of their public works garages.

The Chatham-Kent Fire Department says the fire broke out around 6:30pm Sunday at the municipal garage on Reeders Line in Ridgetown. The fire was reportedly noticed by employees who tried unsuccessfully to put it out.

Fire stations from Ridgetown, Orford and Thamesville were called as the fire went out of control due to high winds. A fourth company, from Blenheim, was called about an hour later.

Crews quickly worked to protect fuel tanks that were near the building, with the winds making conditions difficult.

Chatham-Kent police and EMS assisted on scene. There have been no reports of injuries.

The building houses snow removal equipment and other heavy machinery. It is not immediately known how much damage the fire had done to the equipment.

More details to follow as they become available.
