Politicians Are People Too Says Van Kesteren

The retiring MP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington believes that Canadian politics are in good hands.

Dave Van Kesteren says despite the frustration and dismay among people over politics that the country is well looked after. He says it's easy to get cynical about politics and politicians but they're people too and they have a difficult job.

"They're people just like anybody else. It's important to remember that this great country is a very difficult country to govern because there's so much diversity and geographically we're so different," says Van Kesteren.

He admits that Canada has gone through some tough times and dealt with some tough issues, but it has always had good leadership to get through it.

"We've just celebrated 150 years and we've never had a revolution, we've never had people on the streets burning and destroying things. For the most part, Canadians have had the ability to settle things peacefully," Van Kesteren says.

He says he still has great hope for the future and that Canada will be here for another 150 years.

"It's like a great machine. All these little wheels and all these little cogs make the whole thing work and yeah, I think great things are still ahead for this country," says Van Kesteren.

Van Kesteren admits it's been tough sitting on the sidelines as the opposition for the last two years when he was part of the government for the first ten, but thinks Canada will be fine moving forward.
