Grand Ave. Construction On Hold While It's Cold

Widening and water main improvements on Grand Ave. W. in Chatham have been hit with some unexpected delays.

The $3-million work to replace 100-year-old pipes between Churchill St. and Lacroix St. was originally scheduled to be complete in October but now it won't be finished until June.

A spokesperson for the municipality's engineering department says the contractor in charge of the work ran into some unexpected issues with some of the underground infrastructure and as a result, they will be putting the project on hold for the winter.

In the meantime, crews will be putting down temporary asphalt and completing some temporary line painting to ensure the section of the roadway that's under construction will be safe and accessible for the winter. Once that is complete, all of the construction barrels will be removed for the winter months with work expected to start up again once the weather warms up in the spring.

Lane restrictions and two way traffic will continue for now.

Once the construction is finished, there will be a southbound right turn lane added onto Lacroix, new paving, new curbs and new sidewalks.
