The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) has issued a watershed conditions statement, following heavy rainfall on Saturday.
The LTVCA reports that the Lower Thames watershed received between 10 and 50 mm of rain on Saturday. According to the conservation authority, there is no significant rainfall in the forecast for the rest of the week.
The LTVCA says the rain caused the levels of some smaller rivers and streams to rise. In some places, water banks even became full and spilled over.
To address flooding concerns, the LTVCA operated the Indian-McGregor Creek Diversion Channel Saturday night. The conservation authority says water levels are now declining throughout the watershed.
Water levels on the Thames River are expected to rise over the next few days as the water from the upper watershed makes its way downstream. However, flooding from the Thames River is currently not expected.
The LTVCA is advising people should take extra caution and avoid the river, ditches, and streams. The combination of slippery banks and fast-moving cold water can be dangerous. Children, pets and livestock should also be kept away from the water.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory if necessary. This statement will be effect until Monday.
