New Era Of Roger, Over & Out At CKPS

Chatham-Kent police are moving ahead with upgrades to their radio system.

Old portable radios starting getting replaced about five years ago and now the radios in cruisers and the consoles in the communications centre will be replaced over the next three years.

Chief Gary Conn says the new radios allow for better communication with the Chatham-Kent fire department and Public Works in case of a catastrophic event requiring multiple agencies.

The chief says he's been putting money aside in reserves for about five years.  The price tag over three years is $380,000.

Once the new radios are in place, the chief says they should last until about 2033.  Chief Conn says the new radios are compatible with the current radio system and will extend its life expectancy by about ten years.
