Downtown Chatham Deli Owner Chooses Retirement Over Pastrami

The owner of the Downtown Deli in Chatham is retiring and closing up shop.

Paul Shettell says the deli will close November 24 and a new owner will renovate the building and open up a new business in the new year.

Shettell says the days are long and it's time to relax a bit after eight years downtown.

"It's time to live life instead of work life. I've been down here for eight years and have been in the food business for almost 50," says Shettell.

Shettell chairs the BIA and says he'll remain involved with it in the new year.

Shettell says he's not sure what the new owner has in store for the building on King St. W.

"The building will be under renovation for the new owner and in the new year something else will appear here. He's going to renovate the building and then rent it out," Shettell says.

Shettell says he enjoyed the work and will miss all the patrons and friendships that he's made over the years.

"Just chatting and conversations with customers, that's the most favourite thing, then spend Christmas at home with family and friends instead of in the store slaving away," says Shettell.
