Mother Nature's Fury Causes Flooding Near Erieau

Some homes along Erie Shore Dr. and Dyke Rd. in Chatham-Kent were flooded on Wednesday and at least one homeowner wants to know what the municipality is doing about it.

Trevor Dixon claims the municipality is responsible for an old break wall and shoreline protection that littered his backyard with rock and brush debris driven by high winds and strong waves along Lake Erie on Monday and Tuesday.

Dixon says he's lived on Dyke Rd. next to McGeachy Pond for 30 years and this is the first time his garage and crawl space have flooded.

"When you're getting 30 pound rocks thrown at your house, that's a problem because I have three little kids. These aren't even my rocks, these rocks belong to the municipality of Chatham-Kent. This part of the dyke system but now all of their rocks are on my lawn," says Dixon.

Dixon says property values are down because of the constant flooding and that's making selling and moving tougher.

Erie Shore Dr. and Dyke Rd. also flooded and were shutdown on Tuesday but reopened by Wednesday.

Dixon says he's been trying to get the break wall and flooding problem fixed for ten years but the municipality tells him there's no money to do it.

"There's no money but we have money for useless bridges and money for useless theatres and money for useless trails. We've got 119 properties down here on this road and they love to take our tax money," Dixon says.

He says he's never seen debris like that in his backyard caused by mother nature's fury and loose shoreline protection.

"Something evil happened two nights ago at about midnight. The wind came straight from the south and she was gusting 80 and that's where all these rocks came from. This all happened in a matter of a couple of hours. I wonder when they're going to come and get their rocks off my lawn though," says Dixon.
