CKPS Wants More Eyes To Deter Crime

The chief of police in Chatham-Kent is urging home and business owners to sign up for a new online Video Surveillance Registry.

Chief Gary Conn says the registry will show officers where closed circuit systems and home security cameras are across the municipality and that will help solve and deter crime.

Conn says video could give his officers the lead or evidence they need to solve a crime in any Chatham-Kent neighbourhood.

"Yeah from what I understand, it is an effective tool and those police services that do have it in place, they find it very positive," says Conn.

The chief says crime investigations could get a real boost from quick access to video surveillance.

"Expedite our process in regards to investigations anyway and help us in obtaining leads to, not only property crimes, but violent crimes and even missing vulnerable persons," Conn says.

He says the Video Surveillance Registry is another tool officers have to help fight crime.

"It's not a replacement for canvass door knocks but it will certainly provide us with another investigative tool to assist us in our investigations," says Conn.

The free registry is completely voluntary and a "Security Camera Registry" icon will soon be available at www.ckpolice.com.
