Fire Paramedic Chief Leaving Chatham-Kent

Chatham-Kent will be looking for a new fire paramedic chief.

Ken Stuebing says he and his wife were contemplating retirement when he was offered the job of fire chief in Halifax.

"We decided to take an opportunity to see another part of Canada, and help make a difference in another community," he says. "It was really just too exciting of an opportunity to give up the chance to take that opportunity."

Stuebing's role will be a little different in Halifax.

"My role will be the fire chief, I'm also responsible there for emergency management. But I will be a partner with EMS and police to help keep the community safe," he says.

The highlight of Stuebing's four years in Chatham-Kent was getting to work with such a great team.

"It certainly been an honour to work with that team, but also how break down silos between organizations," says Stuebing. "We're working closely with EMS, and with police, and with Health and Family Services differently than we have before."

Stuebing says it will be tough to leave Chatham-Kent.

"It was a decision my wife and I struggled with, quite honestly," he says. "We chose Chatham-Kent because we could see ourselves retiring here. So yes, the decision to leave, it was very tough and I imagine it will be tough for some time."

Stuebing says they will be back to visit because their son is staying in Chatham-Kent.

His last day is October 20.
