Children Learn Valuable Lessons At CK Farm Safety Day

Dozens of children showed up for Wednesday's third annual farm safety day at the Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village in Blenheim.

Executive Director Barb Lovell says Chatham-Kent is a very rural community and she wants children to learn how to be safe on the farm.

Lovell says stats show that bystanders hurt in farm equipment rollovers are the number one  farm hazard for children.

"Teaching the kids about the importance of tractors and staying a safe distance [away] is really important but also how to use the mechanisms on it. So, the kids are learning everything," says Lovell.

Lovell says 95% of the children who attend the safety day are farm kids or their extended families have farms.

The Dresden Agricultural Society, the OPP rollover simulator, and an ATV mock accident were all part of the day.

Lovell says keeping limbs away from moving blades is also a big message.

"Now there are a lot of safety features on most of the machinery but not everyone has that. There's a lot of older machinery out there. So, we have to be able to target all the kids," Lovell says.

Lovell says it's key to have the safety day just before harvest time to get important safety information about things like ATV safety out to the community.

"We have ATV safety. That's huge in our area right now. There's not enough information out there so we hope to get that information out," says Lovell.
