The 'Community Hub Tour' Goes To Wheatley Tuesday Night

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent continues its information sessions on "Community Hubs" this week.

Civic leaders want to know what the community needs and if dedicated hubs would work better to deliver services.

Amy Wilcox, Manager of Corporate Initiatives, says the municipality believes they could generate economic and social benefits while improving the efficiency of local services.

Wilcox says it would make it easier for people to access the services they need.

"Community groups usually have some limited funds. So, being able to work together and share space, they're then able to take those savings and reinvest them into existing services to enhance them or add services that their community doesn't have yet," says Wilcox.

The Wheatley Legion holds a meeting Tuesday at 6pm while the Tilbury Library has a meeting Thursday at 6pm.

Wallaceburg and Dresden had meetings last week.

Wilcox says making good use of public space and bringing services together in a central location is beneficial to everyone.

"People working together and sharing space.  It makes it better for the community that you can have multiple services under one roof and we're hoping with the community hub needs assessment that we will have these shovel-ready projects in case funding opens up," Wilcox says, adding bringing services under one roof is becoming popular. "We were approached back in the fall of last year by a community group that was interested in partnering with someone in the build of the new building and that's kicked off the summer series."

Findings from the sessions will go before Chatham-Kent Council in the fall.
