Running Towards A Research Centre

Cowbells will be ringing this weekend as participants lace-up for the 5K Sod Buster Run/Walk.

The event will be held at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown campus on Sunday.

Liz Meidlinger, manager of communications and advancement at the university, says the event is to raise awareness and funds for a proposed new Ontario Sustainable Crop Research and Innovation Centre.

The third annual run/walk usually attract many people. This year, Meidlinger says they're expecting about 300 people, including volunteers.

"The rout is really unique, it's all on campus so there's no running on any highways and participants get to see some barns that they run by and some crop research plots, and just our beautiful campus," she says.

Meidlinger says the event is for all ages, but they'll have a little something extra for the youngsters who come out.

"We have a barn yard dash event which is going to be a number of games and activities for kids six and under," she says. "We're also having our red and white theme this year to continue to celebrate Canada's 150th. We're having a big birthday cake at the end, [and] a photo opp with the Canada flag."

In addition, those who finish the run will get a red shirt and a red cowbell as a medal.

"We're looking forward to having a fabulous event and we invite people to even come out and just watch the event if they're not interested in participating," she says. "We welcome volunteers to just come and cheer everyone on."

Those looking to participate can register either at the event or online at RaceRoster.com.

Registration fees are $40 per person, $30 per youth or alumni and kids six-years-old and under are free.

The events starts at 8am on July 9.
