Chatham Man Airlifted with Severe Burns

Ontario's law enforcement oversight agency has been called in to investigate an incident where a Chatham man suffered severe burns.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into a man-in-distress call early Canada Day morning, which was handled by Chatham-Kent police.

Officers were called to an address in the St. Clair St and McNaughton Ave W area of Chatham at about 1:30am Saturday. Shortly after police arrived at the location, a 43-year-old man suffered significant burns over a large portion of his body.

The man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, then airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto for burn treatment. His condition is unknown.

SIU has sent four investigators and two forensic investigators to find out what happened.

Anyone with information on what occurred early Saturday morning is asked to call the SIU's lead investigator toll-free at 1-800-787-8529.
