UPDATE: CK Celebrates Canada 150 - Chatham

UPDATE: Despite a plan to hold fireworks rain or shine at St. Clair College Friday evening, organizers have announced that the event has been cancelled.  It is unknown when the fireworks will be rescheduled.

Canada 150 celebrations get underway in Chatham on Friday.

The Active Lifestyle Centre is hosting a family event starting at 5pm.

"There's a kids area, petting zoo, face painting, balloons, and everything for the kids outside is free," says Executive Director Linda Lucas. "There will be cotton candy and sno-cones, and I do want to stress, rain or shine, the event will still go on."

People are asked to park at the Thames Lea Plaza and take a shuttle to the centre on Merritt Ave.

That event will run until 8pm, then they are offering shuttles to the fireworks at St. Clair College.

"Starting at 6pm with a live band out there, we're going to have some other live entertainment going on out there," says Chatham Canada 150 co-organizer Kevin Neill. "Then we lead right into the fireworks, which are a go, rain or shine."

Neill is asking people to park at Memorial Arena, Erickson Arena, or the municipal lot on Thames St. and take a free shuttle to the college.

Then the party continues on Saturday.

"We have a parade beginning at 9:30 am, your typical parade route headed all the way downtown where you can meet us at [Tecumseh] Park at 11pm," says Chatham Canada 150 co-organizer Lindsay Knight. "We'll have a cake cutting ceremony, and activities begin from there."

The park will have a kid zone with bouncy castles, and lots of live music.
