2017 Blenheim Relay For Life Cancelled

The future of the Blenheim Relay For Life is up in the air.

Cindy Vinall of the Canadian Cancer Society says this year's event has been cancelled and it's not yet known if the walk in Blenheim will be cancelled permanently.

Vinall says despite the remarkable efforts of the organizers, the interest wasn't there.

"The participant numbers just weren't there and it's hard to have all that generosity and not have an event experience for an appropriate amount of people," says Vinall.

Vinall says it's the second year in a row that the Blenheim Relay For Life has been cancelled because of declining numbers.

The Chatham Relay For Life is at Chatham-Kent Secondary School track on June 9 from 6pm to midnight.

Vinall says it was a very difficult decision but the event needed at least 100 people to make it viable.

"Our numbers just didn't make it viable this year.  We had 34 participants registered and eight of those were committee members.  So, the event experience would not be there," Vinall says.

Vinall says the door hasn't been completely shut on next year's Blenheim relay.

"I would not say at this point that it's cancelled permanently.  Blenheim has embraced Relay for Life for many years and it's been very successful.  So, I think I can say stayed tuned," says Vinall.
