CK MS Walk Raises About $40K (GALLERY)

Despite the chill in the air, several people put on their running shoes to participate in this year's Chatham-Kent Mandarin MS Walk.

The fundraiser started Sunday morning at John McGregor Secondary School in Chatham.

Organizer Sheila Clements said this year's goal was to raise $42,000. They came up a little shy of their target but not by much.

It was announced at the end of the walk that the donations received added up to about $40,000.

Clements said the event usually brings out about 80-100 people; and those who show up don't walk on an empty stomach, as breakfast and lunch is provided.

One of the attendees was Chatham native TJ Brodie, hockey player for the Calgary Flames.

"My fiance [Amber Debakker] was recently diagnosed with MS about a year ago so we came out to show our support and raise money for a good cause," said Brodie. "[Showing] your support for people affected by the disease is important."

With the money raised from Sunday's event, Clements said it'll all stay within Chatham-Kent.

"MS is very often diagnosed in [people's] late 30's and 40's, when they have a small family. They have to leave work and disability pensions are not great so poverty is one of the big things."

Clements adds a way they help is by putting money towards the equipment needed.

"[Wheelchairs] could [cost anywhere] from $12,000 - $25,000," she said. "The government will pay 75% and we will try to help as much as possible for the rest."
