A Chatham woman with a heart for helping children in Haiti is relaunching the charitable organization she founded with a new goal in mind.
Emily Hime, who founded Hime for Help and runs a children's home called Maison Ke Kontan just outside of Port Au Prince, is hoping to raise $40,000 so that she can continue to help schoolchildren on the poverty-stricken island nation in the Caribbean.
She says the home has struggled financially over the past year, but she's hoping to turn things around with a new group of volunteers supporting her.
"My focus has been divided between the Maison Ke Kontan children and my growing family," says Hime. "It has been difficult not being on the ground in Haiti on a full-time basis. I am excited to join forces with a new group of committed volunteers who will help me find balance and restore financial stability to the organization."
Most of the volunteers are from Chatham and Wallaceburg, but Hime is also finding support in nearby London.
She says the organization needs to raise $40,000 in order to cover its costs over the summer months when donations seem to drop off a bit.
"It'll help us cover expenses for all of the basic necessities for our kids [at the home]," says Hime. "It's for their education, their medical costs, paying our staff in Haiti -- it's for all of the basic needs for us over the next couple of months."
Hime says the next fundraiser on her agenda is a trivia night that will support the organization. It's taking place at T-Bones Grill House in Chatham on May 31.
