Grand Prix Confident In Canadian Attendance

Detroit Grand Prix organizers are hoping to see more Canadians in the stands this year.

Race chairman Bud Denker says nearly 95,000 people came through the turnstiles at Belle Isle last year, and about 8% were from the other side of the border.

He hopes to see the number of Canadian attendees jump to 10% this June 2-4

"The attendance is so driven by weather," explains Denker. "And people nowadays wait until the very last minute to commit. In fact, over 50% of our ticket sales happen that week [of the races]."

The grand prix is again partnering with the City of Windsor who is offering special ticket packages, which include transit from to and from downtown Windsor.

Denker doesn't think tighter border security since Donald Trump became U.S. president will be a deterrent for Canadians, because he says Transit Windsor does such a great job.

"I think that registration process they have today for the grand prix is a good blueprint, it's a seamless process, and I don't see any issues there," he says.
