Looking For Provincial Support

The mayor along with several municipal staff will be in Toronto today for the 2017 ROMA (Rural Ontario Municipal Association) Annual Conference.

Chief Administrative Officer Don Shropshire says the municipality will be making a couple of presentations with the goal of getting some attention from the province.

With job growth being of primary importance, Shropshire says they'll be looking at what Chatham-Kent can do in order to see economic growth.

"We still have a lot of work to do in economic development, not just creating new jobs but also trying to make sure that the jobs that are created are good paying jobs,"says Shropshire. "To do that we need a certain level of research and support and Workforce Planning Board is a great way to do that."

However, he says businesses looking to grow or relocate to Chatham-Kent are also looking for a reliable source of energy -- another topic the municipality plans to address.

"It's very clear that there's lots of natural gas available, the trouble is we need to expand the distribution system," he says. "Some of the current rules and regulations or restrictions that are in place with both the provincial Ministry of Energy and also the Ontario Energy Board restrict the growth or the development of that network."

Shropshire adds if they can explain what needs to be done moving forward, they're hoping to get the government to change some of the policies in order to expand the natural gas network.

"We think that's critically important -- not just for Chatham-Kent but this is something we've learned is important for all of rural Ontario," says Shropshire.

The ROMA conference will kick off Sunday evening and run until January 31.
