Major upgrades to the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre won't be happening any time soon but certain repairs will be needed over time.
It was recently recommended for council to approve changes to the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre, which would have cost approximately $14.4-million.
After watching a video with the proposed changes and spending time discussing their views, council dismissed the recommendation.
Wallaceburg Councillor Jeff Wesley is one of the councillors who did not vote in favor of the upgrades.
"We simply need to look at the other priorities in Chatham-Kent such as bridges and roads, and those things that are of great importance to the taxpayers," says Wesley.
After taking a look at the proposed upgrades -- which involved relocating council chambers and replacing much of the facility's equipment -- Wesley says it was a little over the top. But, he adds that whether they're extensive or not, upgrades will be needed eventually.
"Yes we'll have to do some repairs but lets phase them in and do it as we can afford them," says Wesley. "I'm all in favor of maintaining the building that we have."
Looking ahead, as stated in the report brought to council Monday night about $11-million will need to be spent within the next five years on life-cycle requirements (like the HVAC system).
