Both the north and south bridges in Chatham's Maple Leaf Cemetery will be preserved and maintained to last for approximately 15 more years.
An information report was brought to council Monday night to go over possible approaches moving forward.
A preferred approach had been outlined in the report, which involved rehabilitating the bridges for an approximate cost of $305,000.
Councillor Doug Sulman had motioned for council to approve this option, adding a few more details.
Sulman added that vehicles be allowed on the south bridge with proper cylindrical barriers and for the preservation process to be complete by September 2017.
"We've now done the right thing," says Sulman. "Those bridges will be preserved which are part of our architectural heritage and people will also be able to drive the cars over the other bridge."
Sulman adds he has been pushing for the bridges to be repaired for quite some time, with his latest motion noted back at the November 21 council meeting.
"It's always nice to have these things come to a successful conclusion," he says. "You never know whether they're going to but I'm pleased that it did."
As approved in council, the 2016 surplus in winter control will be considered for providing part of the funding for the repairs needed.
