Garage Burns In Mitchell's Bay

A garage fire in Mitchell's Bay that caused an estimated $150,000 in damage is being ruled accidental.

Fire officials got the call to an address on Bayview St. just after 9:30pm Thursday night.

When they arrived at the scene, a two-storey structure was already in flames with the risk of spreading to a number of houses and two large propane tanks that were nearby.

While crews were battling the fire, they were also confronted with the challenge of controlling the blaze in freezing cold temperatures with significant wind blowing in off the bay.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the one building and managed to keep the propane tanks cooled while the flames were put out.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Fire officials are also reminding the public to use extreme caution when operating tools with an open flame, to keep those tools away from combustible materials, and to never use an open flame to defrost pipes.
