Limiting Fire Hazards In Your Home

Keep a close eye on your candles this Christmas weekend.

That's the message from Chatham-Kent fire chief Ken Stuebing.

He says new technology is helping to limit fire hazards, but the risk remains.

"With all the new fake candles that are on the market, we get a little bit of comfort in knowing people are using those other devices," says Stuebing. "But certainly over the holidays -- most of us who have spent a Christmas at the fire station know we're going to go out to a call that day."

Stuebing also has some other tips for people who may be trying to keep warm over the holiday weekend.

"Make sure you get your chimney cleaned by a professional, move your space heaters away from any combustible materials, and you shouldn't rely on extension cords for permanent wiring," says Stuebing.

Fire officials are also reminding local residents to keep their Christmas trees well-watered in order to prevent them from drying out, which makes them more susceptible to catching fire.
