The Woman Behind The Red Scarves

Red-knitted scarves are being worn around town as part of the United Way of Chatham-Kent's latest campaign, but there's one woman in particular who's responsible for making them.

Sue Preston along with a few others at the St. Andrew's United Church Women's Group first started making scarves for AIDS Support Chatham-Kent a couple of years ago.

"We handed over last year 21 scarves - and not negating that number, but i thought 'I bet we could do more,'" says Preston.

With that in mind, Preston says she got permission to buy wool and open the scarf campaign to everyone in their congregation.

"I got up with a clear garbage bag, full of wool like Santa and asked if people would help," says Preston. "[I] was blown away with people who just came forward at the end of the service."

Through word of mouth the need for scarves traveled to people in areas such as Windsor and Guelph.

"So this year we were able to turn over 62 scarves," says Preston. "So out of 30 balls of wool came 62 scarves, I'm thrilled to death."

Community Development Coordinator of AIDS Support CK Steve Pratt says they raised around $1,200 during the campaign's first day.

"We're getting great awareness out there that HIV Aids does affect our community," says Pratt. "We're just helping to raise some awareness here in Chatham-Kent."

The campaign will run until mid-January.
