Police in Chatham-Kent are noticing a shift in the types of drugs that addicts are using.
Chatham-Kent Police Chief Gary Conn says they're seeing more methamphetamine and heroin popping up in the community.
In the past, Conn says they've noticed the drug of choice to be cocaine or oxycodone, specifying the drug of choice among users is constantly changing.
"It's good for us to know what the trends are because then we can direct our resources to those drugs of choice," says Conn.
By knowing these trends, Conn says officers are able to change their approach in dealing with these types of situations.
Although Chatham-Kent has seen a slight decrease in crime rates this past year, Conn says they still see a lot of break and enters. He says since these types of drugs aren't cheap, many of the break-ins are so users can get money to feed their drug addictions.
"They're looking for quick cash," says Conn. "They look for crimes of opportunity so they'll go around and check doors, to see if doors are unlocked in vehicles and homes."
Conn says they're constantly trying to educate residents on the importance of making sure their properties are secure, making it harder for break-ins to occur.
"A lot of these people who commit these crimes - I say they look for crimes of opportunity [and] it's because they're lazy," says Conn. "They're just looking for anything that's easily accessible for them."
Statistics on the demographic of meth and heroin users, as well as the crime rates for this year won't be available until the 2016 annual report is released.
