Fire Crews Reassure Locals After Fire (GALLERY)

Chatham-Kent firefighters are revisiting the site of a fire on Queen and Richmond streets to answer any questions they might have as part of their reassurance campaign.

Local firefighters went door-to-door Tuesday afternoon making sure people have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors installed.

"The feedback for our reassurance campaign has been excellent," says Public Educator for CK Fire Whitney Burk.

Their visit to the area had been sparked by a structure fire that broke out on November 12, which caused significant damage and sent one person to hospital.

"It's always a concern for fire departments when you're dealing with commercial and residential properties together," says Burk, adding it's also concerning when dealing with a fire at an apartment buildings or high-rise building. "You control your own fire safety, but you're also living next to others and you can't control how they protect [their property] or how they act."

Since the investigation regarding the fire is ongoing, details are limited.

"We had a lady quite seriously hurt by the fire," says Assistant Fire Chief Chris Case. "We know there was an explosion, which is currently being investigated."

When it comes to preventative measures, Case says it's important to have proper devices and have them checked on a regular basis. He says most fire departments generally see more fires this time of year because people are trying to warm up their homes.

"The weather's getting colder, people are using their gas appliances, people are using other forms of heating -- so we stress to people to be careful," says Case.

CK fire will be launching a campaign in the near future urging residents to check their Christmas lights when decorating their homes, as lights are also a potential fire hazard.
