Careful Crossing The Street

Students at Dresden Area Central School will have to make due without a crossing guard or a pedestrian crossover signal device (PXO) for the next six months.

During Monday night's council meeting, councillors went back and fourth regarding the North St., crossing in Dresden.

The topic has been brought to council three times in the past. During that time, it was decided that at the municipality would remove the adult crossing guard program at the end of November and replace it with a PXO device.

However, the devices are not expected to be installed until May 2017.

A few parents and students showed up to the council meeting holding signs, showing their concerns.

One parent, Jenn Pedersen, says not having a crossing guard or a PXO device makes crossing the road very dangerous for children.

"It's a major highway that they're crossing," says Pedersen. "I think it's irresponsible of the municipality to leave [students] six or seven months without any service provided."

In recognizing this, council has moved for signage to be maintained at the school crossing until the devices are installed. The municipality is also expected to work with the contractor, Ron Field and Son Electric Ltd., in an effort to speed up the process on installing the PXO devices.

Councillor Joe Faas says this is the best the municipality can do at this point.

"Well, I guess it's the best of a situation," says Faas. "I would have like to have seen something more but because of the procedural by-law that wasn't possible."

Moving forward, Pedersen says parents will keep brainstorming alternatives that will ensure safety for students crossing the road.

"I don't know if there's a possibility to reducing the speed in front of the school because it's still a 50km/h zone," says Pedersen. "Maybe that's an avenue we can take to help slow down the traffic."
