'Small Business Is The Backbone Of Our Economy'

Local businesses are being put under the spotlight during Small Business Month.

Project Manager for the Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board, Kristy Jacobs says small businesses seem to be thriving in the municipality.

"Small businesses seem to be doing really well," says Jacobs. "It's a tough and a competitive market but the ones that are doing really well, they've done their research and they know what their niche market is."

Jacobs says there aren't a lot of major businesses that hire 5,000 plus employees, so small businesses play a major role in Chatham-Kent.

"If we have 100 small businesses and each one is in a position to be able to hire two people, that's huge economic growth for us," says Jacobs. "It's always been said that small business is the backbone of our economy here in Chatham-Kent."

One important factor for small businesses is gaining exposure, which is something a select few were able to do Wednesday afternoon.

At a Dragons' Den style luncheon, six local entrepreneurs pitched business ideas to a panel of judges.

One business owner, Alicia White says although she didn't leave with a prize she did achieve something.

"My goal at this event was to at minimum leave with some new clients and I know I already made one [new] connection," says White.

White has recently started her own business, "Alicia White's Income Tax Preparation and Bookkeeping Services".

"So far it's looking good," says White. "I have several businesses and individuals that are interested in having me retain for their services."

Jacobs says local entrepreneurs can contact the CK Workforce Planning Board if they're in need for any advice.
