Chatham Sisters Win $53,000

Two sisters from Chatham have won big with LOTTO 6/49.

Jackie Polyak and Fran Vandermeer have won $53,249.60 with a ticket purchased at the St. Clair St. Food Basics.

“We’ve been playing as a group for more than a decade,” Polyak said while collecting their winnings in Toronto.

Following the LOTTO 6/49 draw on August 3, the two were at the store when Polyak decided to check their shared ticket. The scanner displayed "Big Winner - $53,000," on the screen.

"I thought to myself, ‘this can’t be right’ and rescanned the ticket. The same words appeared again so I went to get Fran. I dragged her through the store by the arm to the ticket checker," says Polyak.

Once they confirmed their ticket was a winner, the two say they started crying and hugging.

"I am planning to retire," says Vandermeer. "Just a few days before winning my car broke down. I had to buy a new one and I thought I would have to put retirement on hold until I can pay off my new car. Now I can retire. I’m especially looking forward to spending some time with my 15 grandchildren."

The pair won by matching five of their numbers with the winning draw, as well as the game's bonus number to win a secondary prize.
