Special Air Quality Statement In Effect

In addition to a heat warning, Environment Canada has now issued a special air quality statement.

The agency, and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change say the heat and intense sunshine means high-levels of air pollution could materialize in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. Moderate risk levels are expected for most of the day Thursday, but could spike in the afternoon.

Elevated levels of ground-level ozone can irritate the throat, increase coughing, cause headaches and shortness of breath. Children, seniors and those with cardiovascular or lung disease are especially at risk.

You can help spare the air by leaving your car at home and walking or taking public transit, mow the lawn another day, and by delaying painting or using harsh smelling cleaners.

Spare your health by avoiding exposure to exhaust fumes, avoiding strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day and calling your doctor if you experience symptoms.
