Grade School Student Steals Teacher's Car: Police

A 12-year-old Chatham boy is behind bars after police allege he stole his teacher's car.

Investigators say the student allegedly took a set of keys from his teacher's purse yesterday afternoon around 2pm.

He didn't know which car was hers, so he hid out behind a tree in the parking lot and watched as she walked to her car. When the teacher couldn't find her keys, she went back into the school to look for them and that's when police allege the boy got into the car and drove away.

He didn't make it very far, school officials stopped him at the end of the street by the unnamed school and the police were called.

He faces a charge of theft of a motorvehicle. He is in police custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Police say no one was hurt and there was no damage to the vehicle.
