CK Gets Grant To Upgrade Cenotaph, Fix 'Embarrassing' Mistake

Veterans Affairs has granted Chatham-Kent $8,000 for cenotaph upgrades after learning of the misspelling of "remembrance" on the war memorial.

Councillor Michael Bondy says the federal government reached out to him after the carved in stone spelling mistake made headlines across the country.

A concerned resident brought it to council's attention in 2015. One cement carving commemorating those lost in the Korean War reads "Korea: 1950 - 1953. In Rememberance." There is one too many "e"s in remembrance.

However, Bondy says the general consensus was to leave the mistake as is, and not spend taxpayers' money on it.

He filled out the forms the grant and forgot about it, until recently when he was notified his application had been approved.

Now, the municipality has $8,000 to spend on the cenotaph. But, Smith Memorials and Scribendi, a locally based proofreading service, are going to cover the cost of fixing the mistake.

"All the money that we're getting federally is going to actual restoration of the cenotaph. So, the cause of the problem is being fixed at no charge and all of the money that we're getting from the federal government is going to other restoration projects on the cenotaph," Bondy tells BlackburnNews.com. "I don't know that people really would appreciate spending money on what's going to be done, so it's kind of nice that it is grant money."

Bondy adds the cenotaph will remain where it is, despite rumblings over its location in the past.
