Province Invests In Local Cycling Infrastructure

A number of local municipalities are set to receive a grant for cycling infrastructure, thanks to an investment from the province.

Through the Ontario Municipal Cycling Infrastructure Program, Windsor, Tecumseh, LaSalle, Kingsville and Chatham-Kent will be receiving $325,000 each over the next two years, to expand cycling infrastructure.

The municipalities will begin receiving funds in spring 2016. The funding will go towards the installation or improvement of on-road cycling lanes, off-road cycling and walking paths, cycling-specific traffic signals and signs, active transportation bridges and bike racks.

Windsor will put the money towards creating 1.6 km of cycling facilities on Cabana Rd., including a combination of painted bicycle lanes, signed bike routes on shared roadways and raised cycle tracks.

A new 3.5 km off-road cycling and walking path will be built in Tecumseh, and will connect to existing trail systems, including the Herb Grey Pkwy. Trail.

LaSalle will build a new 800 metre cycling and walking path, which will connect to existing off-road trails on either side of Malden Rd.

Kingsville will be investing in 4.1 km of cycling routes that include paved shoulders, an off-road path for cycling and walking and signed bike routes on shared roadways.

And in Chatham-Kent, a new 4.35 km painted bike lane will be installed, which will connect to existing multi-use trails and form part of the Trans Canada Trail.

A statement from the province says investing in cycling infrastructure is part of the government's economic plan to grow the economy and create jobs.
