The Thames River through Chatham continues to rise and officials with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority are recommending some precautions.
Water Management supervisor Jason Wintermute says, if you use parking areas next to the river along King St., be ready to move the vehicle because it will be difficult to judge how high the water will get.
"If it hadn't been raining the water level in Chatham would have peaked around 5am, but we had an additional 20 mm (.78 inch) of rain last night and that has boosted water levels on top of the peak that is already here," he says. "We are preparing to operate the Sixth St. backwater dam in case the water levels rise that far. As long as it is still raining there is the potential for it to rise even further."
Wintermute says basement flooding in the buildings along the King St. business district in Chatham is also possible.
The LTVCA continues to advise people to avoid streams and ditches as well as the river.
