Snye River Chosen As Preferred Water Source

Wallaceburg residents are one step closer to a final decision on the source of their drinking water.

An evaluation committee has announced that the preferred solution for a water source in Wallaceburg is to upgrade the current water treatment plant, and continue drawing water from the Snye River. This option was chosen by the committee over sourcing Wallaceburg's water from Lake Erie, like the majority of Chatham-Kent.

The preferred solution was presented to the public Thursday night at the UAW Hall.

Chatham-Kent Councillor Jeff Wesley says Wallaceburg residents were pleased with the decision made by the evaluation committee.

"The people of the community wanted to keep the current source of drinking water that we have, and that was the recommendation," he says. "Everybody is very happy, it was a very positive meeting."

The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission will make a final formal decision on the town's water source during a meeting on March 2.

"I talked to the commissioners [on Thursday] and they were supportive of the process we've gone through, they were supportive of the recommendation," says Wesley. "We, as a community, still have to see it to the end and make sure we reach out to those commissioners between now and March 2, and make sure they support the [preferred solution]. Once that's done, it's final."
