Replace Memorial Arena Soon: Report

A new report recommends a twin pad arena in Chatham sooner rather than later.

Municipal staff had originally set an arena replacement time line of 10-to-20 years, but a new report says that should be fast tracked to the next five or ten years.

An official with International Coliseums Company says the old barn simply has too many deficiencies, especially when it comes to the cooling system and floor beneath the ice.

The report was commissioned to help council decide how to spend the $100,000 from the Kraft Hockeyville winnings. Minimal upgrades in the lobby or front doors are possibilities.

The study also recommends building the twin pad on the same property, for a seamless transition for user groups when it's done and Memorial Arena closes.

The report heads to council tonight.
