Possible Air Transat Strike Causes Concern

Local travel agents are "very concerned" over the possible pilot strike at Air Transat just before the busy March break.

Air Transat flies out of Windsor to Punta Cana and the airline's pilots may strike by the end of February if a deal isn't reached.

Owner of Goliger's TravelPlus in Windsor Sarah Hupalo says her clients have some options if a strike were to happen.

"Sometimes the airline may try to reprotect with another airline, sometimes they're still operating on a skeletal basis," she says. "Other times people can go through their credit card and try to get a refund. There are sometimes insurances that we have that will allow people to cancel for any reason."

In extreme cases the government may even step in and force the airline to fly, she says.

"There could be thousands of people in countries that need to get back home. As an essential service they may require them to bring them back or still operate," Hupalo says.

Air Line Pilots Association Transat members voted 97% in favour of strike action, which could happen at the end of February if no deal is reached.

Air Transat began flying out of Windsor Airport on December 21.
