Officials with the University of Guelph will find out tonight if Chatham-Kent council will give them a helping hand towards building a new research centre.
They're asking for $1.5-million to help leverage more funding from the provincial and federal governments.
East Kent Councillor David VanDamme, who's bringing forward the motion, knows it's not an easy time to ask for money with everyone thinking about the budget.
"If we are able to look at this objectively and with some forethought, I think the sentiment around the table is that this is a good thing for the entire municipality," says VanDamme. "It brings opportunity and further advances agriculture, which is something that we do so well."
VanDamme says ideally, the project would be funded over a period of five years. If the motion to support the funding passes, the details will be formalized through the 2016 budget process.
