Stalling Vaccinations Could Cause Issues

Public health officials in Chatham-Kent are concerned about parents not only refusing vaccines for their children, but also delaying vaccinations.

CK Public Health nurse Sheila Satchell says they're seeing parents opting to wait to have their child go through their regular immunizations. She adds the schedule has been researched and set up for a reason.

"It's according to when the child is most at risk and most susceptible to disease," she says.  "There are numerous immunization schedules in each province."

Satchell believes parents hold off, or even keep their child from getting vaccinated, because the diseases the vaccines protect them from are not prevelant.

"Because they haven't seen it, they don't understand the seriousness of the disease. So people get a little lax, and think 'Oh it's not in our community I won't worry about it.'"
