Newkirk Property Finally Moves

It's been a long road for Don Thompson, but he's glad to finally be in possession of the Sicklesteel-Newkirk main building.

Thompson has been working with property owner Keith Graham, filling out paperwork and dealing with electrical roadblocks to take possession of and move the former inn and tavern. On Tuesday the building has been moved from its Longwoods Rd. location to its new home at 8800 Talbot Trail. Thompson will leave the building as-is until March, when he'll begin restoring it.

"There's local furniture that are fitting the project, some people are offering to sell them. But that's down the road certainly. The main concern right now is to restore the roof and get it on a foundation."

The move resulted in multiple power outages for Hydro One customers throughout Tuesday. Thompson apologizes for those necessary adjustments, and thanks Hydro One for their hard work.

"They were instrumental in making sure this happened. At any time they could have said no this is too big of a deal."

The property was denied Heritage Designation in July in order to facilitate the move or demolition of the former inn and tavern.
