Residents Can Smoke At Riverview

Smoking residents at Chatham’s Riverview Gardens won’t have to travel far to be able to light up.

Chatham-Kent Council has adjusted its smoking bylaw to allow those living at the Gardens to be able to smoke in the facility’s courtyard. Director of Senior Services Tami Gillier says the courtyard is a good space for this accomodation.

“It’s more than nine metres away from any doors. There is a separate area that families and residents who don’t wish to smoke can go to. Same goes for those residents who do wish to smoke.”

The decision was made after staff noticed residents having to walk far away from the building to smoke a cigarette. They worried the residents would have to dodge traffic during the day. They’re also concerned about smokers trying to do their business in their homes, creating a potential fire hazard.
