Internet-Based Therapy Sessions Starting

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is making it easier for local residents to access mental health services.

As of November 2nd, individuals will be able to connect with a therapist through a secured network over the internet.

Project lead Dan Saunders says that will allow individuals to participate in therapy from wherever they feel comfortable.

"With the vast geographical layout of the municipality, we do service individuals from every small corner of the municipality," says Saunders. "Transportation issues and things like that often prevents people from accessing the services that they need."

And the Health Alliance has already seen some of the benefits through a pilot program.

"We've been doing this for a few months now," says Saunders. "And we've had some success connecting with individuals for therapy who normally, whether it be through physical illness or distance, wouldn't be able to access the services that they need."

Saunders says the internet-based service is not replacing traditional face-to-face therapy, it is simply being offered as an alternative.
