Terry Fox Runs This Sunday

There are seven Terry Fox Runs planned for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent Sunday.

The run is held across Canada on the second Sunday after Labour Day. This year, runs are being held in about 220 communities across the country commemorating the original Marathon of Hope. It started April 12, 1980 in St.John's Newfoundland, and ended 143 days later in Thunder Bay.

Terry Fox was the first Canadian to hold such a fundraiser for cancer research. His trek originally raised $1.7-million.

During a recent visit to the region, Fox's brother, Fred Fox, told BlackburnNews.com the support over the past 35 years has been overwhelming.

"We say through Terry's name $700-million has been raised but all the other events that have spawned from that. (They have) raised additional money for other organizations, (so) you can almost credit Terry for that as well."

In Windsor-Essex, the biggest run starts at Green Acres Optimist Park in Tecumseh. Registration begins at 8am and the run gets underway at 9am.

The run in Chatham starts at Kingston Park. Registration for the 35km run/walk starts at 6:30am with the event starting at 7am. Registration for the 1 km, 5 km and 10 km run/walk starts at 8:30am. In Dresden, the event at the Royal Canadian Legion starts at 10am and wraps up at 1pm. Tilbury's run starts at the Tilbury Arena with registration at 10:30am. Blenheim's Terry Fox Run starts at the Blenheim Memorial Park/Arena. Registration is at 8:30am, and the run starts at 10am. Ridgetown's event is at the Royal Canadian Legion on Broadway St. from 4pm to 6pm. In Wallaceburg, registration is at 9am with the run starting an hour later - it's being held at Civic Square Park on James St.
