New Book Hits Store Shelves

A new book chronicling the region's rich sports history hits the shelves today.

Retired phys ed teacher Larry Lahey has penned The History of Kent County High School Sports. The 70-year-old felt the book needed to be written after the new athletic athletic association formed in 2014 when the Kent and Lambton regions merged.

Lahey says he uncovered a lot of stories he found interesting. "For example in the 1930's and 40's in boys basketball there were numerous fights in games," says Lahey. "It seemed almost common place, you know today you don't see that at all."

Lahey says he talked to about 100 people while writting the book, which took about 16 months to complete. The book is being sold at Lenover Quality Meats in Chatham, and the Instant Print Shoppe locations in Chatham and Wallaceburg, for $25 including tax.
