Federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is promising to be a champion for the auto sector if his New Democrats are elected to govern and adds more details of the party's auto policy are coming in the next few weeks.

"I will never waver from a rock solid commitment to work with the automakers, to work with the province to attract investment in auto assembly in this great city," says Mulcair, speaking at the Fogolar Furlan Club in Windsor on Wednesday night for an NDP rally. "As your prime minister I will be a champion for new investment and new jobs and kick start Canada's auto sector."

While Mulcair told Dippers and watching reporters more auto policy details are on the way, he did outline some of what the party would do.

"I will work with the Province of Ontario to streamline the support process to attract investment. I will set auto job, investment and [research and development] targets and give the new auto czar the resources and tools to meet those goals," says Mulcair.

He adds the Auto Innovation Fund needs to be fixed, pointing to $600-million he says went unused. Mulcair also says Canada missed out entirely on $24-billion in worldwide auto investment last year.

"Good paying, family-raising jobs are simply going elsewhere. That's [Prime Minister] Stephen Harper's track record my friends," says Mulcair speaking to supporters. "Under an NDP government, this will change."

Along with stressing the importance of the auto sector to his party, Mulcair also reaffirmed NDP committments to $15 a day daycare and $1.3-billion a year for transit service.

The NDP leader was not taking questions from reporters at the Windsor rally after taking questions at two previous stops in the day. Mulcair is set to be in Amherstburg tomorrow morning for another stop on his Ontario tour, before moving on to Sarnia and London.
