Calling For More Migrant Worker Protections

Justice for Migrant Workers is pushing the province to give farm workers more protection under labour laws.

Tzazna Miranda with the Leamington-based group says one of the big demands is to stop pay exemptions for certain workers.

"Labour law in Ontario allows certain groups of workers to not be covered by specific protections such as the minimum wage, or breaks, or overtime pay or holiday pay," says Miranda.

"We're asking for special protections for migrant workers, so for anti-reprisal mechanisms that means employers can't fire or send workers home when they file claims or stand up for their rights," says Miranda. "I think we're going to be able to pass that message along to the ministry of labour, to [Premier] Kathleen Wynne."

The province is reviewing its labour laws and Miranda feels now is the time for change, pointing to the recent landmark case involving Wheatley's Presteve Foods which was ordered to pay $200,000 to two migrant workers alleging harassment under former ownership.
