Expensive Pipe Break In Chatham

A 36 in. watermain break is costing the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission $100,000.

"We've hired a contractor that has done this repair before for us in 2002; a similar break," says Tim Sunderland, area manager for the PUC, adding the money is coming from reserves.

Sunderland says the water is safe and there is a plan to keep it flowing.

"We are expecting no interruption in anybody's service," says Sunderland. "We have a plan in place in the PUC to provide water throughout this. We have a temporary bypass going in right now to be able to supply water and all our reservoirs will be full."

The pipe break is close to the water plant in Chatham along Grand Ave. E and Sunderland expects the repairs to be completed next week.
